FAQs
Check out our explainer specifically for families who are new to hockey!
In the 2023-24 season, the Ice Dogs fielded rec-level coed hockey teams at 8U/6U, 10U, 12U, 14U and 18U, and girls’ travel-level teams at 14U and 19U. We expect to field teams at those same levels/age groups in 2024-25.
Due to limited ice capacity caused by our home rink renovation, the Ice Dogs currently do not have coed travel teams participating in the Chesapeake Bay Hockey League (CBHL). We expect to resume our coed travel hockey program in the 2025-2026 season when the Mount Vernon ReCenter reopens.
Our girls’ teams compete in the CBHL. Tryouts for the 2024-25 season were held on May 2 & 4, 2024. Contact Larry Blake, larry.blake@novaicedogs.org, for more information.
For the 2024-25 season, all of our coed teams will participate in the Capital Corridor Hockey League (CCHL). We don't hold tryouts for CCHL teams and registration is based on capacity. We typically open registration in mid-June/July, with priority registration for returning families and then opening to new players as space remains.
If you are new to the Ice Dogs, email the registrar and ask to be added to our email list.
For the 2024-2025 season, we anticipate CCHL coed hockey (10U-18U) will start in early September. Practices are held one night/week at Tucker Road Ice Rink in Oxon Hill, MD. Teams usually play one game/weekend, either at Tucker Road or at rinks in the DMV area.
The 8U/6U team practices once a week on Sunday afternoons at Tucker Road Ice Arena and attends jamborees or tournaments throughout Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland.
For the 2024-2025 season, we anticipate Girls CBHL travel hockey will start in August. Practices are held 2x/week at Tucker Road Ice Arena in Oxon Hill, MD. Teams usually play games (league and non-league or tournaments) on weekends.
All Ice Dog coaches are volunteers; many are parents of players or former players. All coaches are USA Hockey certified, complete several hours of USA Hockey certification for the age level they are coaching, are SafeSport certified, and must complete a background check.
Given the limited ice availability in the region, our ability to offer camps and skill clinics remains limited. During the season we continue to look for opportunities to enhance our players' experience with off-ice training and skill clinics.
